Harvard Business School Professor Goes To War Over $4

A HBS Professor called Ben Edelman (Funnily years ago I’ve been in touch with him because he wanted to quote an analysis of mine from a TechCrunch post in one of his classes) goes rather nuts about a $4 discrepancy at a bill at a local chinese restaurant.

The story is currently going viral and best comment I’ve read so far on the story is that Edelman “should visit some classes on the American Dream”.

Here is the full story available.

Human Failure and Air France 447

I’ve  practically read everything available on the Air France 447 crash while on route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris and still can’t believe the series of events that lead to this tragedy. Especially considering the safety mechanisms embodied in a modern Airbus jet airliner. The best book on the topic is probably Jean-Pierre Otelli’s Erreur de Pilotage.

In 2011 Popular Mechanics published a detailed report of the flight’s final moments in a gripping manner.

Vanity Fair (huh?) published another excellent – almost superior than the Popular Mechanics – on the disaster entitled the “human factor”. Contrary to the other article, Vanity Fair is not shy (and absolutely right) that the crash is largely due to the fact that the 2nd pilot, Bonin, a 32-year old junior, was basically unable to grasp the situation the airplane was in (alternate law, stall, etc.).

It is fascinating how in-depth a post mortem is possible these days. I wish this was true for other industries (such as medicine). It really makes things safer and safer.

The Most Beautiful Water

I hate the fact that companies are charging for bottled water – in this case it’s sparkling water at least. Probably though the most beautifully packaged water I’ve come across.

A Remarkable Letter From LEGO

This is apparently not fake and dates back to the 70s. LEGO included this fantastic piece of paper to their sets.

Here’s the transcript:

“The urge to create is equally strong in all children. Boys and girls.

It’s imagination that counts. Not skill. You build whatever comes into your head, the way you want it. A bed or a truck. A dolls house or a spaceship.

A lot of boys like dolls houses. They’re more human than spaceships. A lot of girls prefer spaceships. They’re more exciting than dolls houses.

The most important thing is to the put the right material in the their hands and let them create whatever appeals to them.”

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

As heard in the magnificent, emotional, intense and probably one of the best films ever made – Interstellar.

by Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

(Übersetzung 1 = Curt Meyer-Clasons):
Geh nicht gelassen in die gute Nacht,
Brenn, Alter, rase, wenn die Dämmerung lauert;

From Austria

There is a dedicate site offering unique products from the tiny country I am living in – Austria. It’s accordingly called From Austria and a neatly curated shop with a pretty broad range of products. I’ve recently received these lovely self-made candies.

Those traditional Viennese wine glasses are superb! See more below the fold.
